Bargain Meal of the Week

Are you ready to join me for dinner? It’s time for this week’s “Bargain Meal of the Week,” based on the weekly New Seasons Market ad. (And remember to check out the many other meals from the contributors at $5 Dinners!)

This week’s meal was requested by my husband- a delicious split pea soup! Bulk foods are on sale this week, so it’s a great time to restock those pantry containers (flours, grains, spices, etc).

In addition to the sale on bulk Split Peas, smoked Ham Hocks are on sale in the butcher department; the perfect combo for split pea soup! Organic Celery is also on sale this week, which is a wonderful addition to the soup.

Click here for the full recipe: Split Pea Soup with Ham Hocks
(Note: I reduced the split peas to 1/2 lb, as that seemed to make plenty, but kept all other ingredients at the same amounts.)
1/2 lb. green split peas = $0.72
2 qts. water (maybe less)
1 celery, chopped = $0.20 (1/4 lb)
1 lg. onion, chopped = $0.79
2 carrots, chopped = $0.20 (1/4 lb; buy the 5 lb bag of organics)
1 tsp. salt
1 clove garlic, chopped and minced finely = $0.02
1 ham hock = $1.99 (1 lb)

As a side dish along with the meal, visit the sale-priced bulk section, and stock up on flour to bake your own bread! Napa Valley Naturals Extra Virgin Olive Oil is also on sale.

Click here for a basic recipe: 100% Whole Wheat Sourdough Bread
Organic Whole Wheat Flour = $0.93 (3/4 lb)
Olive Oil = $0.36
Local Honey = $0.23 (Wessel’s)

(These costs reflect a recipe for the whole loaf. Half a loaf is likely to be sufficient for one meal!)  Half a Loaf of Bread = $0.76
Total Cost: $4.68
(Optional: Serve with 4 Tbl. Tillamook Butter for the bread at $0.38, for a Total Cost of $5.06

Stop by $5 Dinners for more weekly bargain meals, based on the supermarket sales in your area!
