Living A Simple Life-Part 51 (Restful Focus)

This week, living simply has meant letting go of much, and focusing on choosing what is best. You may have noticed that besides this post, I took about a week-long blogging-break to intensely focus on resting and healing.

Last Tuesday, after only 5 hours of being sick with complications of celiac, my husband was packing me up to go to the hospital, keeping in mind that he had two “patients,” not just one. (You know it is a “serious emergency” when this EMT husband of mine insists on going to the hospital, instead of treating you at home!)

I was so discouraged at having to go to the hospital, but knew it was the best choice for myself and the baby, after consulting with our midwives over the phone. I let go of my “homebody” self-sufficiency tendencies for the night, and agreed to call a friend in the middle of the night (to stay with Gen), and to go to the hospital.

Later in the week, once I was home, it was so easy for the multitude of chores to catch my eye. I wasn’t always successful at ignoring all that needed to be done, as I attempted to keep up on the laundry, etc. But a faithful friend arrived on Saturday to “rescue” me.

She whisked Gen off for a day of fun, and instructed me to take a nap! There was such a mixture of “mommy pains and joy” in my heart, as I watched my little girl heading out the door. A mixture of sadness that I wasn’t able to give her all she needed that day and not able to take her on the Farmer’s Market adventure myself, but rejoicing that a friend would shower her with love and give both her and me a special day.

So, the house isn’t really clean, the curtains still aren’t hung, and there are still a handful of moving boxes to be unpacked. But in choosing what is best- rest and recovery- these things needed to be put aside for a time. I couldn’t even muster up the strength to focus on reading and returning e-mails, so thank you to those who sent your sweet notes- I’ve finally read them! :)

In my time of illness and recuperating, God was faithful to make Himself known to me in new ways, as He provided encouragement, strength, and healing. He has been my refuge and stronghold, holding my hand along the way.

The LORD is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer;

my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge.
He is my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.
Psalm 18:2
