Living A Simple Life-Part 53 (Spring Gardening)

These past couple weeks, we have enjoyed beginning some spring gardening! I began with a “homeschool” unit with Gen, where we read Eric Carle’s The Tiny Seed, and then worked together on starting seeds.

(Last year, we read Lois Ehlert’s Planting a Rainbow and Growing Vegetable Soup.) This year, as an Easter gift, we gave her some packets of seeds and a set of child-sized gardening tools.

I had been saving up egg cartons to use for planting our seeds, and Gen had lots of fun sprinkling in the potting soil. She carefully added the little seeds to each one, and helped mist them with water. We used this Egg Carton Method, and then enclosed each open carton in freezer bags from the Dollar Store to create a “greenhouse effect” inside, while sitting in our windowsills.

Calvin has been regularly digging up a garden area for us in the back lawn, and thoroughly enjoying the fresh smell of the soil! We’ve also begun an outdoor composting pile (still very small at this point!), in addition to our vermicomposting system.

I have been brainstorming our seed ordering for the past month, and we’ve accumulated an assortment of seeds and starts.

Today, Gen & Calvin put the first of the plants into the warm soil of the garden area! (Honestly, I dozed in a camping chair in the sun on the back porch, wrapped in a light homemade quilt, and sipped lots of water.) :)

As I prepared dinner, we talked about what a simple experience of faith it is to plant those little seeds in the ground, and hope that they will grow. We hope that God will allow these little plants to grow and flourish, providing homegrown food for our family. But we place those seeds in His hands, and look forward to the future!
