I decided to do a slightly “superfluous” project, in addition to the necessities, and sewed up a dozen cute burp cloths! (Well, the burp cloths are pretty essential; but that fact that they’re cute is not.)
My main motivating factor was that I didn’t really want these getting mixed up the laundry with our cleaning rags. Once Gen was old enough to not need burp cloths anymore, they were quickly put to use scrubbing around the house. (Yeah, the wash probably gets them clean enough; but I just cringed at the thought of wiping baby’s face with a rag that has been scrubbing ickies off the floor at one time or another!)
I used the simple directions on this site, and was thrilled to find some sweet “vintagey-looking” fabrics in the remnant sale bin at the fabric store. Red, green, and brown are my favorite neutral baby colors (along with the color theme in most of my home decor, actually), and I was able to find some brown grosgrain ribbon (using a coupon) to coordinate with my fabric choices.
Gen is rather baffled at what these creations might be for, but is delighted at the thought that we have something special “for the baby,” as she points out to me regularly. (I’m sure she’ll soon be grateful for these items, once she discovers what babies can do!)
I’m looking forward to sharing more of my “Baby Essentials” sewing projects with you soon! So what are you making these days? I’d love to hear!
