Simple Fall Treat: Homemade Caramel + Apples

One of my favorite homemade treats for gatherings in our home is a batch of caramel sauce! It’s delicious spooned over ice cream or as a dip for freshly-picked apples.

Updated with more natural ingredients (check that ingredient list on commercial toppings; it often contains icky corn syrup), it’s a better alternative to some sweets that start appearing this time of year.

A batch is easily whipped up for last-minute guests for an impromptu party or an afternoon treat (perhaps alongside some popcorn, too!); it’ll be ready in about 10 minutes.

Homemade Caramel Sauce

1/2 Cup Dark Muscovado Brown Sugar
1/4 Cup Real Cream (Jersey cream is amazing if you have it, or use organic whipping cream.)
2 Tbl. Honey
1/2 Tbl. Real Butter
1 tsp. Cinnamon

In a heavy saucepan, mix all ingredients together, and bring to boiling. Stir constantly! Lower heat and simmer for exactly 5 minutes (no longer, or it can become rock hard), while still stirring. Let cool for a thicker sauce, or use while still warm.

Makes about 3/4 cup sauce.
This recipe is easily doubled, if desired, and stores well in a jar in the refrigerator if you decide to make it ahead… don’t ask me how long it lasts, though; it disappears quickly in our home!
