		<description><![CDATA[<p>Some basic favorites are on the menu this week. As I can, I&#8217;ve been doing some extra baking as well as doubling meals to stock the freezer. (Last week, bananas and peppers were on sale, so I baked up loaves of banana bread and chopped up bags of peppers for fajitas.)</p>

<p>I realize I’m talking about gardening, and it’s only February 1<sup>st</sup>.  Yes, there are probably a few more snowy and icy days still ahead, but, in my defense, I had flower plants peeking out of the ground last year on or about February 19<sup>th</sup>.  So… I think it’s okay to start thinking and dreaming about spring.  <img src='http://frugalgranola.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif' alt=':)' class='wp-smiley' /> </p>
<p>It has not worked out for us to have children (a post for another day), so I’m not about to give parenting advice.  But even those of us without children can still offer some <em>creative</em> ideas for teachable little minds.</p>
<p>Examples where you might find this appropriate – someone without children offering ideas about teaching children – would be a school teacher; someone with an in-home daycare service, responsible for other parents’ children; a Sunday school teacher; or so many other possibilities.  In these positions, it’s an obligation and privilege to find effective ways of communicating godly truths into the lives of children.  <strong><em>Teaching them how to walk with the Lord ALL DAY LONG is one of the most valuable lessons you will ever teach.</em></strong></p>

<p>Since I enjoy flower gardening, I thought I would offer one specific way of doing this, applicable to flower, fruit, vegetable, herbs or spices gardening.</p>
<blockquote><p>As you find yourself in the yard and in your edible garden, pay special attention to specific plants that were mentioned in the Bible.  It’s a teachable moment, and one that could involve memorizing verses about plants. It can serve as a springboard for a multitude of faith-based conversations with your children.</p></blockquote>
<p>Here is a sample list of plants listed in the Bible, and at least one verse for each.  There are MANY other plants mentioned too.</p>
<ol>
<li><strong>Lily of the Valley</strong> – Song of Solomon 2:1 “I am the rose of Sharon, and the lily of the valleys.”  It may not be referring to the specific flower we think of as the “Lily of the Valley”.  Maybe it’s a different lily that was typically found in that region’s valleys, but it definitely causes my mind to think about scripture when I think about the name of this flower.</li>
<li><strong>Rose of Sharon</strong> – see verse in no. 1</li>
<li><strong>Flower</strong> – James 1:9-10</li>
<li><strong>Apple</strong> – Psalm 17:8 “Keep me as the apple of Your eye; hide me under the shadow of Your wings,.”</li>
<li><strong>Olive Tree</strong> – Romans 11:16-36</li>
<li><strong>Cucumbers, Melons, Leeks, Onions, &amp; Garlic</strong> – Numbers 11:5</li>
<li><strong>Beans</strong> – 2 Samuel 17:28</li>
<li><strong>Grain</strong> – Deuteronomy 14:22</li>
<li><strong>Bitter Herbs</strong> – Exodus 12:8</li>
<li><strong>Vine</strong> – John 15</li>

<p>The weather outside has been dreadfully cold where I live on the Canadian prairies. All this past week there has been a severe cold front hovering over the prairies, and it has been approximately minus forty (and worse) for about 5 days straight. <strong>Needless to say, we’ve been fairly housebound this week!</strong></p>
<p>Because days like this are plentiful around here, <strong>I am always looking for good ways to keep the kids (and me!) from getting cabin fever.</strong> Here is a list of some of my favorite ideas. There is a good mix of parental hands-on stuff and kids-on-their-own stuff.  I chose items with the toddler/preschooler crowd in mind, but many of these could easily apply to older kids too.</p>
<ol>
<li><a href=" http://www.playcreateexplore.com/2010/05/kitchen-utility-paper-activity.html">Tin Foil Exploration</a>.</li>
<li>Coloring. <em>(If your crayons are all in bits, try making some <a href="http://frugalgranola.com/2011/04/homemade-recycled-crayons/" target="_blank">recycled crayons</a>!)</em></li>
<li>Laundry. <em>My three-year-old loves to help sort, throw the clothes in the machine, switch to the dryer, and then sort the clean things!</em></li>
<li>Dance party. <em>Get some groovin’ tunes going, then start dancing!</em></li>
<li>Hide &amp; Seek.<em> Be sure to let them be both hider and seeker.</em></li>

<li>Stay in PJ’s all day and have breakfast for supper. Have a (gentle) pillow fight.</li>
<li>Bring out a new toy that you’ve been saving. <em>I sometimes tuck away a few of the kids’ birthday or Christmas gifts that they’ve received to bring out gradually over the next few months.</em></li>
<li>Give the kids a ball of old yarn from your stash to unravel and play with.</li>
<li>Make masking tape roads on your carpet for toy cars and trains.</li>
<li>Let them help clean – scrubbing the floor, vinegar spray, sweeping, vacuuming, wiping mirrors, cleaning the tub are all favorites of my kids. <em>You may have to “finish” the job, but they will be entertained and staying out of mischief while you get some cleaning accomplished!</em></li>
<li>Sit down on the floor and roll a ball back and forth to each other. I<em>t’s amazing how much my kids love this simple activity.</em></li>
<li>Do a photo-documentary of your day, with help from the kids.</li>
<li>Build block towers, then roll a ball to knock them down.</li>
<li>Trace their bodies on easel paper, decorate, and put them up on the wall.</li>
<li>Look at digital photos on the computer.</li>
<li>Look at their baby books &amp; show them your wedding photos.</li>
<li>Watch old home videos.</li>
<li>Ask your kid to tell you a story. <em>My three-year-old’s vivid imagination has come up with some pretty crazy tales!</em></li>
<li>Snuggle up and listen to an audio book.</li>
<li>Have a tea party. Invite stuffed animals/cars/trains/dolls. You could even bake something special for the party together.</li>
<li>Have a fun lunch in the blanket fort. <em>We have been known to serve popcorn with lots of butter and green smoothies for lunch on occasion.</em></li>

<p>Brewing a cup of tea is one of the easiest methods of administering herbs. Pouring warm water over a tea bag or a teaspoon of dried herbs, takes only a few minutes and results in a relaxing, nutritious drink that packs a medicinal punch.</p>
<blockquote><p><strong>Basic tea preparation when using dried or fresh herbs:</strong></p>
<p>1 teaspoon of dried herb or 2 teaspoons of fresh herb per cup of water.<br />

<p>I received a timely review copy of the <a href="http://www.designedhealthyliving.com/inc/sdetail/1398/1407" target="_blank">Treasures of Health Nutrition Manual</a> from Designed Healthy Living a couple months ago, and it has been at our fingertips for browsing at the dining table. Multiple family members looked through the book during visits over the past weeks, appreciating the <strong>quick-read format and succinct reference information</strong> to answer nutritional questions.</p>

<p>I found this book helpful in working through the question of whether or not to use supplements (based on eating a healthy, real food diet). The information provided helps provide reasons when they may be necessary, or offering food alternatives instead.</p>
<p><strong>At one point, I appreciated the current research information on Vitamin D supplements.</strong> My midwife tested my blood vitamin D levels this winter. Even though I&#8217;ve consciously tried to add real foods rich in this vitamin to my diet, we found that my results were still very low, and needed supplementation during this season of pregnancy (and soon, nursing again).</p>
<p><strong>I loved the analytical recommendations of nutrient-rich raw milk</strong> (with its naturally-occurring lactase for digestion)<strong>, grass-fed/pastured meats, avoiding the <a href="http://www.ewg.org/foodnews/list/" target="_blank">&#8220;Daily Dozen&#8221;</a> produce and GMOs, and using only natural sugars</strong><em><strong>.</strong> (However, I would recommend pairing this book with <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0967089735?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=fruggran-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=0967089735" target="_blank">Nourishing Traditions</a>, as I prefer to avoid soy altogether and use &#8220;real fats&#8221; such as butter and coconut oil, for example.)</em> The author is a bit more accepting of soy consumption than I am, and more cautious- but still encouraging- of the use of fats.</p>
<p><strong>The biblical perspective of the <a href="http://www.designedhealthyliving.com/inc/sdetail/1398/1407" target="_blank">Nutrition Manual </a>is refreshing.</strong> If you&#8217;re in the midst of transitioning your food choices or embarking upon a new diet, it can be especially helpful to meditate upon the encouragement of Bible verses.</p>
<p><strong>The <a href="http://www.designedhealthyliving.com/inc/sdetail/1398/1407" target="_blank">Nutrition Manual</a> is also a resource for lifestyle information,</strong> encouraging healthy exercise, biblical &amp; medical perspectives on birth control, chemicals in the home, and even some healthy tips for pet care!</p>
<p><a href="http://www.designedhealthyliving.com/books1" target="_blank">Designed Healthy Living offers a selection of materials</a>, in addition to the Nutrition Manual book, including Bible studies for groups, a cookbook, DVDs, and more.</p>

Since squash and apples keep well in a cool basement, garage, or pantry for months, <strong>they&#8217;re a great stockpile food to rely on for stretching the grocery budget!</strong></p>
<p><strong>You could substitute another type of squash, if you prefer, such as butternut or delicata.</strong> (Use more or fewer squashes, depending on their size.)  We often serve a green vegetable alongside this meal (such as kale), as well. If you do want a grain with this meal, it is good with some rice or a loaf of crusty bread.</p>
<p><strong>Make sure to use organic apples and celery</strong> when possible, for best health benefits, since they&#8217;re usually right at the top of the <a href="http://www.ewg.org/foodnews/list/" target="_blank">&#8220;Dirty Dozen.&#8221;</a></p>
<blockquote>
<h2 style="text-align: center;"><em>Sausage &amp; Apple-Stuffed Acorn Squash</em></h2>
<ul>
<li>1 large or 2 small Acorn Squash, cut in half &amp; seeds removed</li>
<li> Approximately 3/4 &#8211; 1  lb. <a href="http://frugalgranola.com/2008/11/kitchen-tip-tuesday-homemade-sausage/" target="_blank">Homemade Breakfast Sausage</a>, uncooked <em>(egg can be omitted, if desired)</em></li>
<li> 1 small Apple, diced</li>
<li> 1/2 Cup chopped Sweet Onion <em>(if you have not already added this to the sausage mixture)</em></li>
<li>1 clove Garlic, minced</li>
<li>1/2 Cup diced Celery</li>
<li>2 Tbl. Coconut Oil or Butter</li>
</ul>
<p>Place acorn squash halves in a large baking dish (with the &#8220;insides&#8221; facing down), along with about an inch of water poured into the pan. Bake at 400 degrees for about 45 minutes, until soft enough to poke in a fork through the peel, but not too mushy.</p>
<p>Near the end of the squash&#8217;s baking time, heat a saute pan on the stove. Melt the oil or butter, and saute the onions, garlic, and apples for a few minutes. Add the uncooked sausage mixture, and cook through.</p>
<p>Remove cooked squash from the oven, and discard any remaining water from the baking dish. Flip the squash over, so the &#8220;insides&#8221; are now facing up. Fill the squash halves with the cooked sausage/apple mixture. Return to the hot oven, and heat through about 5-10 minutes. Serves about 4.</p>
<p><em><strong>Variations: </strong>Optional additions can include dried cranberries and sliced almonds, hazelnuts, or pecans. </em></p></blockquote>
